The Gap Between Knowing and Changing
Updated: 1 day ago
I've read the books and done the courses. I've journaled and meditated my way through entire seasons of my life. I could articulate my patterns with clarity, the self-doubt dressed up as perfectionism, the shrinking in rooms where I should have been taking up space, the inner voice that said not yet, not enough, not ready. I understood it all. And then I'd walk straight back into the same patterns anyway. For a long time I thought that was a willpower problem. A discipline problem. A me problem.

Until the penny dropped on the fact that your conscious mind; the thinking, analysing, rationalising part of you only controls roughly 5% of your behaviour. The remaining 95% is run by your subconscious. The part storing your habits, your automatic reactions, your core beliefs about what you're worth and what's safe to want.
Which means that most personal development; the reading, the journalling, the therapy that stays in the talking, is working on a small part of the problem.
Insight lives in the intellect. Change lives somewhere else entirely.
I didn't fully understand this until I experienced it myself. My version of "not enough" wasn't overt and didn't announce itself. It just quietly shaped every chance to speak up, every room I didn't fully enter, every opportunity I intellectually understood was mine and still somehow couldn't take.
What shifted wasn't more experience, more credentials or more confidence. What shifted was working with the subconscious — going underneath the narrative I'd built about myself and finding the older, quieter belief that was actually running things. The one that had been installed long before I'd realised.
People who know me, know that I'm a very solution driven person - I wanted to change so badly, to brainwash myself into being more confident. So I hired a hypnotherapist. Not the kind you see on stage, but the kind that brings you into a deeply relaxed, focused state where the subconscious becomes genuinely accessible - at the expert hand of my first hypnotherapist. He guided me to uncover the root cause of a belief I had about myself.
Beliefs formed early in life are reinforced and resist contradiction over time. Change requires experiences that feel real and salient enough to challenge expectations. Hypnotherapy creates exactly that - a felt experience, not just an intellectual one.
For me, the shift wasn't quietly dramatic and persistent. The voice that used to say I'm not experienced enough, connected enough, ready enough, slowly became something different. Not false confidence nor affirmations I didn't believe. Just a more honest relationship with uncertainty - I haven't done this before but I'm figuring it out and that's ok. Accepting that about myself was a big win for me.
Fast forward almost two decades and that's comfortably carried me into uncharted territories - among other things, a Tedx stage and many speaking opportunities that used to terrify me. I don't always know what I'm doing, but I'm no longer afraid of that. When I work with clients who are mostly founders and high-achievers, they're not lacking insight or willpower. What's frustrating for them is that they're drowning in it. What they're missing is the felt shift that actually moves the needle.
One client came to me having spent years in talk therapy, deeply self-aware, articulately describing a pattern of self-sabotage that kept showing up in her business. She knew where it came from. She knew what it cost her. She just couldn't seem to break the pattern.
In three sessions, we found what the talking had never reached - a series of moments from her childhood where she'd learned that being too visible wasn't safe. Once that belief was updated at the level it actually lived, the pattern didn't have the same grip. She didn't need more insight, she needed to feel her updated reality - that it is safe to be visible.
If you've read all the books and you're still in the same place, there's nothing wrong with you. You're just working on the wrong 5%.
If you're ready to work at the level where change actually lives, I'd love to work with you. Find out more at allgreatminds.co.
